I filmed a video. Actually, that’s not right. I filmed that video and then filmed it six more times. And none of it seemed right.
None of it seemed good enough.
It doesn’t say nearly enough. It doesn’t even encompass what I’m feeling right now or how much my heart is breaking, both for my online friends and for my offline ones. I have seen their tears, their frustration, and their exhaustion. It is not their job to educate us. It is not their job to placate us, pat us on the head, and tell us we’re good little allies, especially if we’re not.
I haven’t been a good ally. But I’m learning to be better. To do better.
Human rights. Civil liberties. Things that we take for granted are being debated over. Politicized. This is not a political issue. It’s fucking human rights.
We need change. People are being hurt and being killed. And none of it is their fault. All of it is because their skin is not white.
We need to dismantle the antiquated systems that keep black folks down because they’re black. We need to shut up and listen to them when they speak up. We need to educate ourselves. We need to do better.
Listen. Record. Educate. Share their stories.
I’m locking comments for this post because this is not a debate. If you miss the point of “black lives matter” with your “all lives matter” bullshit, then you need to go educate yourself.
Black lives matter.
This is where I stand.
